The Pontiac air conditioning system is one of the most important systems in the car. It helps to keep the car conducive for the ride, especially in extreme weather conditions. The three main parts of the air conditioning system have a special role to perform and are aided in their functions by different subparts. These parts are connected by tubes and hoses.
In the Pontiac air conditioning system, a refrigerant constantly flows through the air conditioning components. Pressurization, condensation, and vaporization are the three-step process which the refrigerant cycle follows. The flow of the refrigerant begins when it enters the compressor through the suction port as a low-pressure vapor. The release of the vapor after it is squeezed into a confined area (pressurization) is through the compressor’s discharge port. The compressor, by pressurizing the refrigerant, causes the refrigerant vapor to become hotter than the outside air. What this ensures is that the refrigerant will change to a liquid when the cycle enters the next phase.
When the refrigerant is pressurized, the high-pressure refrigerant vapor is pumped by the compressor to the condenser. The condenser is located in front of the radiator directly behind the grille. The engine fan draws outside air over the condenser while the incoming air absorbs the heat contained in the high-pressure vapor. This action results in the condensation of the vapor into a high-pressure liquid which completes the condensation phase.
From the condenser the refrigerator makes its way to the evaporator. It makes its way through a metering device resulting in a considerable drop in pressure. This allows the refrigerant to vaporize at a lower temperature. This allows the refrigerant to absorb the maximum amount of heat as the blower forces warm air over the evaporator. The vaporization process is complete at this point and the vapor laden with heat is drawn back into the compressor to repeat the cycle.
The Pontiac air conditioning system has an accumulator which is very essential as it contains a desiccant, a chemical that attracts moisture. The combination of water and refrigerant can form corrosive acids which can ultimately destroy the system. The accumulator can also act as a temporary holding tank for liquid refrigerant.
