The primary components of the Plymouth air conditioning system are connected by tubes and hoses. Their connection forms two distinctive sections: one, a high-pressure side and the other, a low-pressure side. The heat is transferred from the interior of the car to the exterior by circulating a chemical refrigerant throughout the system. While the refrigerant is circulating throughout the air conditioning system, it alternately transforms into a liquid and a gas.
The major Plymouth air conditioning system components include a compressor, condenser, evaporator, accumulator or receiver-dryer, and expansion valve or orifice tube. The air conditioning compressor pumps and circulates the refrigerant throughout the system. The compressor needs to be lubricated well at all times as it is considered to be the heart of the air conditioning system. When the compressor is functioning it generates a lot of heat. The reason for this is the pressure-temperature relationship of the refrigerant. When the refrigerant is compressed there is an increase in the temperature of the refrigerant. That is the reason for the excessive generation of heat. The compressor clutch comprises a field coil, a pulley, and a clutch hub. The hub is connected to the main shaft of the compressor which engages the clutch and starts the compressor pumping.
The heat exchanger more commonly known as the condenser is usually located in front of the engine cooling radiator. The condenser cools the refrigerant. Thin wall aluminum is generally used to make condensers. As a result it becomes prone to failure by either internal or external corrosion. Road salt and weather conditions lead to external corrosion whereas contamination in the system causes internal corrosion.
The other heat exchanger is the Plymouth air conditioning evaporator. The evaporator is responsible for making the air cold. After passing through the expansion valve or orifice tube the liquid refrigerant enters the evaporator. The hot air crossing the evaporator is directed across the evaporator. The liquid refrigerant boils by absorbing the heat from the air. Once it boils and turns into vapor, the refrigerant leaves the evaporator for the compressor.
Accumulators are installed on the vapor side, just after the evaporator and before the compressor. It is manufactured with filter screens to filter and hold debris or corrosion flowing through the system.
